Heard of intermittent fasting, but don’t know exactly what it is?

Well, I’m going to break it down and give you a quick introduction to what it’s all about.

Fasting  is an ancient tradition, long believed to be vital to human’s physical and spiritual health. And it has been practiced for millennia by various different cultures and religious groups, and is now widely being appreciated for its beneficial effects on human metabolism, health span, and general wellbeing.

Traditionally fasting is the act of abstaining from all food or drink with the exception of water for a period of time. But in our modern age, there are many different types of fasts ranging from [00:01:00] eliminating all food and drink through to restriction of certain food groups.

Now, when I speak of intermittent fasting, I’m talking about a set time where you don’t eat and where the body is free from food so it can digest and cleanse itself because one of the most intensive things the body does each day is digest its food. So it needs a rest.

Just like our physical body and mind need a rest each day to rejuvenate and come back to balance. So does our digestive tract, and this is why intermittent fasting can be a very helpful daily practice.

Intermittent fasting is the restricting of the timing of food intake to certain hours of the day, typically between an eight and 12 hour window, but without actually reducing the number of calories that you’re intaking.

So why should we intermittent fast? Well, here are a few of its key benefits.

First of all, weight loss.

When we say that certain foods are restricted, we feel deprived and we end up eating more than we should or not at all in some instances yet when we focus on [00:02:00] intermittent fasting for health and for longevity or for digestive health, then the weight is out to fall off more naturally as a result of higher goals without the need to try so hard. It also comes down to our insulin levels when you eat your insulin levels rise. But when you don’t eat for an extended period of time, you enter this fasted state and your insulin levels will be low in your body, starts to use fat as its energy source.

Another benefit is the gaining of muscle mass. You’ll be eating the same calories and protein as before, but you’re just changing the timing of nutrient delivery and by doing so, you’re giving rest to your digestive tract. And instead of breaking down the food in the evening or while sleeping, you’re enabling your body to repurpose the energy and put it towards muscle growth and repair.

Next up easy implementation. I mean, it’s one thing to tell someone what to eat and how, but it’s another thing to tell them when to eat. And by focusing only on the [00:03:00] time when you eat food, you’re not restricting yourself. Therefore you don’t feel deprived or have so many cravings. You’re not saying “don’t eat this”,  you can simply eat as normal during the day, but just stop eating from say 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM. And therefore, when you focus on the timing versus what to eat it’s far easier to follow through and see their results.

And then lastly, fasting is a mindful practice with a greater sense spiritual connection.

When we fast, we can fully focus on and be present with the thoughts that we think. And as you become aware of the thoughts that we think we can actively seek higher thoughts and enable our lower order thoughts to be replaced by them. these higher order thoughts, feed our souls, they fuel our bodies and they heal our minds.

The act of fasting also requires discipline in order to achieve ang maintain health and success, discipline around the timing of eating, and around your thoughts during this time, activate the energy to enhance your life.

[00:04:00] It also requires patience. And when you’re anble to develop that patience, you can endure and overcome any difficult situation with the knowledge that you’re going to make it through the other side. In other words, having patients ensures that you don’t give up too soon or lose out on the results of your efforts.

It also helps to boost mental clarity. I mean, so many people walk around, filled with stress, worry and anxiety. And when you are able to rid yourself those factors, you can focus in a different way. The fog has gone. Your mind is clear and you’re out to view life from a new perspective.

So if you’d love to give intermittent fasting a try, we’re running a 31 day intermittent fasting challenge, which kicks off on December 1st.
